Working with the Prince’s Trust to help young people get on

As part of our Little Helps Plan we want to provide opportunities to help young people develop their employability skills.

In August 2018 we launched a three-year partnership with The Prince’s Trust, committing to help 10,000 young people in the UK to develop their employability and life skills. Our commitment is focused on three areas:

  • Funding the running of 40 Achieve Clubs in secondary schools in areas of greatest need
  • Developing relevant content and lesson plans that will be available to all young people participating in an Achieve Club, starting with Practicing Leadership Skills and Customer Service
  • Bringing the content to life for young people through volunteering opportunities for our colleagues

Our relationship with the grocery industry's research and training charity IGD, gives Tesco colleagues the opportunity to help young people understand the wide variety of jobs across the food and drinks industry, and the skills needed to succeed.

Through 40 funded Achieve Clubs, we offer World of Work tours in our stores and in the office. These tours provide young people with the opportunity to understand a wide variety of roles in Tesco stores and our head office, as well as supporting them with their interview skills. Renuka Morris, Curriculum Manager at Blackpool & Fylde College says:

“Young people return from these sessions absolutely 'buzzing' with excitement. The skills, challenges and potential opportunities that have been developed are beyond measure.

“It has raised the hopes and aspirations of some students, and some are taking on board just how important the 'right attitude' is as an employability skill.”

Through our partnerships with the Prince's Trust and IGD, we've reached 7,845 young people so far. For more information on how we support our colleagues please click here.
