Helping children develop outside the classroom in Norwich

Young children in Norwich are benefiting from new outdoor equipment that will help improve their fitness. Heather Avenue Infant School was awarded a £4,000 grant through Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, and this money has been used to rejuvenate the school’s unused outdoor space.

The equipment includes monkey bars, swings, ropes and balance beams, and has been designed as a challenging fitness trail. The aim is to help the 4-7-year olds develop their core strength and agility and explore the world outside the classroom.

Stacey Coleman, Headteacher at Heather Avenue, said:

“We started the project with a view to encouraging a healthy lifestyle among children, and we’ve already seen it benefit all 165 of our pupils.

“We’re hugely grateful for the funding from Tesco. It has made a huge difference and I would strongly encourage other schools and community groups in the area to apply.”

The £4,000 Tesco grant was funded by the sale of reusable Bags for Life through Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme with charity partner, Groundwork, which provides funding to thousands of community projects every year.

Keith Jackson, Tesco’s Bags of Help Manager said:

“It’s great to see how the Bags of Help grants are being used to support different projects, especially when it comes to promoting health and wellbeing.

“This year, we’re proud to be offering Bags of Help Centenary Grants, and with this July/August voting round dedicated to health, we look forward to discovering projects that support this topic.”

Tesco customers vote in-store for the community projects they’d like to receive grant money. Local charities or community organisations can be awarded funding between £1,000-£4,000.
