Secret Santa sales soar this season

It’s the newest Christmas custom to be adopted by Brits but Secret Santa has quickly grown into a mini industry, Tesco data can reveal.

The occasion whereby workmates are randomly assigned to buy a small gift for a colleague started to take off in the UK in the noughties after being brought over here from America.

But it has quickly become a seasonal tradition and the supermarket has seen demand for small gifts under £10 rocket by 150 per cent over the last two Christmases.

Tesco gifting range buyer Kasha Tarasiuk said:

“Secret Santa really started to take off this decade and it has created a mini industry for small, fun gifts in the £5 to £10 price bracket.

“These aren’t children’s stocking fillers but more fun games such as quizzes that can be enjoyed by the whole family, or food and drinks accessories.

“The majority of sales take place in the two week run up to Christmas which the time when most office parties take place and colleagues exchange their gifts.

“We’ve got a great range of gifts – big and small – so however you do Christmas, everyone’s welcome at Tesco.”

Among the most popular Secret Santa gifts being bought this Christmas are fun quizzes, charade style games and a chilli sauce challenge.
