Supporting our LGBT+ colleagues
Out at Tesco Network Chair Lisa Tait and Lead Tesco Bank Rep Greig Moir share how the network supports colleagues all year round.
Out at Tesco is one of the largest LGBT+ colleague networks in Europe, with over 3,000 members across the Tesco Group. The purpose of the network is simple – we want to support and develop our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex colleagues, so that they feel confident to be themselves at work.

When I was waiting for my interview in the Tesco Bank reception, an advert for Out at Tesco caught my attention on the plasma screen. I was instantly impressed. LGBT+ employee network groups have been, and continue to be, a driving force for both sexual orientation and gender identity equality in the UK.
We offer our members confidential advice, support, mentoring and career coaching. The network also supports and organises a calendar of LGBT+ events across the UK that our members and non-members can participate in, such as LGBT History Month, National Coming Out Day and Pride events.
Tesco is a great place to work if you’re in the LGBT+ community but generally speaking there is still a lot to be done. We’ve supported a number of line managers with people policies and assisted colleagues coming out in the workplace which is a daunting experience.
Last year we raised over £27,000 through Pride products for our chosen charity Diversity Role Models who do incredible work in tackling homophobia in schools. This year, Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline is the Tesco Pride national charity partner and we’re donating over £75,000 to small LGBT+ charities in five cities across the UK through our Bags of Help scheme.

I joined Out at Tesco as I want to be part of a group where you’re able to have open discussions and feel at ease in doing so. It was also a perfect opportunity to meet new people from other areas of the business.
I work in the Complaints department at Tesco Bank and my Out at Tesco experiences have given me the opportunity to make sure that our processes and procedures are designed to ensure that trans customers have the best experience. It also helps me to ensure our colleagues understand how to best support customers who are transitioning.
It’s continually growing and evolving, and I think we offer a fantastic network for our colleagues. As a group we’re constantly looking at ways to engage colleagues, but as Lisa says there is definitely more work to be done throughout all work forces in the UK, and we assess regularly how we can continually develop within the network.
