140 tonnes of extra raspberries taken by Tesco to prevent food waste
Tesco works with its British suppliers to offer 150g punnets of raspberries for £1, saving food waste and offering customers fresh fruit at an affordable price.
This summer’s unpredictable weather has led to our suppliers having excess crop. This week our raspberry supplier Berry World have picked a huge amount. We have worked with them to take more and offer the bonus berries to customers at a discounted price.
Supporting our British growers
We want to support our British farmers and stop any raspberries from going to waste. British raspberry farmers are able to make more profit from their bumper yield and customers benefit from low cost fresh fruit.
Helping our suppliers
At Tesco, we’re passionate about working in partnership with our suppliers so that no edible food goes to waste. In the last 12 months, we’ve been able to take bumper crops like this and offer customers bonus deals on strawberries, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, lettuce, lemons and celery. Customers benefitted from great prices; our farmers were happy we could take more from them, and we prevented good food from going to waste. Everyone wins.
This is another example of Tesco working with our farmers and suppliers to give customers the best British products, at the best prices.
No time for waste
This initiative is part of our ongoing work to tackle food waste wherever it occurs – from farm to fork. Tesco believes that no food that could be eaten should be wasted. That’s why we’ve committed that no food that is safe for human consumption will go to waste from Tesco UK Retail operations by the end of 2017.
