Bumper British strawberries crop taken to help our farmers
Bumper British strawberry crop bonus for customers will help support British farmers and prevent food waste.
The sunshine experienced across the UK has meant that our British strawberry crop has come-on in bigger volumes than forecast. Growers from Herefordshire, Kent, Lancashire and Scotland have told us about a small crop flush brought on by the bonus British sunshine.
Supporting our growers
We want to support our British farmers and stop any strawberries from going to waste. So to help our homegrown suppliers Tesco has bought an extra 500 tonnes of British strawberries to help growers use the bumper crop of fruit created by a warm spring. 1kg boxes will continue at a discounted price for customers for a further week. Customers benefit from choice and low cost fresh fruit and our British strawberry farmers are able to make more profit from their bumper yield. The extra strawberries will be available in our Express stores.
Daniel Martin of S&A Group:
"The recent warm weather has accelerated our early crop of strawberries and we are thankful for Tesco's great support by being immensely flexible in the face of rapidly growing availability of fresh juicy British strawberries."
In February, Tesco were the first retailer to put British strawberries back on our shelves and now working with our suppliers we’re able to offer even more bonus berries to customers.
Helping our suppliers
At Tesco, we’re passionate about working in partnership with our suppliers so that no edible food goes to waste. In the last 12 months, we’ve been able to take bumper crops like this and offer customers bonus deals on carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, lettuce and celery. Customers benefitted from great prices; our farmers were happy we could take more from them, and we prevented good food from going to waste. Everyone wins.
This is another example of Tesco working with our farmers and suppliers to give customers the best British products, at the best prices.
No time for waste
This initiative is part of our ongoing work to tackle food waste wherever it occurs – from farm to fork. Tesco believes that no food that could be eaten should be wasted. That’s why we’ve committed that no food that is safe for human consumption will go to waste from Tesco UK Retail operations by the end of 2017.
